Band members traveled to Holston High School in Damascus on May 5, for the Solo and Ensemble Contest. This event allowed musicians to perform individually, as a duet, or in small groups. Judges rated the student’s performances according to each entrant’s ability level, not in comparison to other groups. Each individual’s talent played a large part in the final scores. All Chilhowie students who participated received a superior rating.
On Saturday May 16th, Chilhowie Middle and High School bands took a well-deserved trip to Carowinds, to enjoy a day at the amusement park. Students paid for the trip by participating in fundraising events throughout the year; they raised enough money to pay for a luxurious charter bus, park admission, and a buffet supper.
On Sunday May 17th, the Middle School and High Schools bands presented their annual Spring Concert, which was the final concert of the year. The CHS Auditorium was filled with an enthusiastic audience, who heard the 6th grade band play “Space Shuttle Rock,“ and the whimsical “Linus and Lucy” theme; 7th & 8th grade performed the exciting “Apollo Fanfare” and “Pandora”, and the high school band featured five compositions including “Benediction” and the bold and triumphant “Majestia” selection. Senior band members were recognized for their admirable service to the band, and school, by a round of applause.
Sydney French was chosen to be the 2015 - 2016 Drum Major. Candidates for the position were judged on their leadership, dependability, and conducting abilities. Color Guard members are now hard at work perfecting their routine for the fall marching season, and Band Camp will be held this summer in July.
Band members are optimistic that the new season will bring new challenges and the band will be better than ever.
